PE and Sport Premium
Every School in the country has been given additional funding from the Government to improve Physical Education, sport and to promote healthy lifestyles.
Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer and to develop or add to the PE and sport already in place, for example:
- to hire sports coaches to work with teachers
- to provide existing staff with training and resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively
- to introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport
- support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs
- to run sport competitions
- to increase participation in school games
- to run sports activities with other schools
Aims and objectives in PE at Asterdale Primary School
- Physical education develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities.
- Physical education promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action. It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills and promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle. Thus we enable them to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives.
The aims of PE are:
- to develop competence in physical skills to excel in a broad range of activities, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement;
- to be physically active for sustained periods of time;
- to develop increasing ability to select, link and apply skills, tactics and compositional ideas in competitive sports and activities;
- to develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success;
- to lead healthy, active lives, developing an understanding of the effects of exercise on the body, and an appreciation of the value of safe exercising;
- to develop the ability to work independently, and communicate with and respond positively towards others;
- to promote an understanding of safe practice, and develop a sense of responsibility towards their own and others’ safety and well-being.
- to promote team working and good sportsmanship.
Physical Education
Activities are made available to all through differentiation in teacher planning. Children take part in games, gymnastic movement, dance, athletic activities and outdoor learning, including Forest Schools. Children can take part in after school clubs. Year 2 have dance lessons at a local dance studio, Year 4 have swimming lessons and Year 6 have the opportunity to take part in a residential trip with a focus on outdoor activities and team-building skills. All members of staff have copies of the Inclusion Policy. It is the policy of Asterdale Primary School to ensure that every child receives an equal opportunity within PE activities, regardless of race, gender, ability or Special Educational Needs and/or Disability.
